Hey homies, got a story for you. I work as a swim instructor. My regular shift is 5hrs, Friday evenings. First day no one showed up for a class of 10 people. I looked at the attendance, the start date says next week. Only for this class.
I bring it up with my supervisor and she realizes she sent out the wrong start date to this one class and that she’s going to extend the session for an additional week and asks if I can teach for it. I said sure, I’ll do it for 3 hours pay at Swim Instructor rate. (Which is what we are paid if a shift is cancelled and we don’t get notified ahead of time.)
I thought this is pretty reasonable, but she said unfortunately it is my regularly scheduled shift and I’ll have to do it for 45 minutes paid (30 min class + setup)
This is a Friday evening and the cost of gas almost makes this a moot earning for me, I’m considering calling in sick for it, but that would inconvenience the 10 people in the class I’m teaching.
We have a union, but their are a lot of things still very weird here, like being required to work after our shifts have already ended cleaning the deck and writing class totals on the master attendance, but that’s another story.
