I have to work exactly 8 hours every day?

I’ve worked at a part time position for my company since March and a full time position recently opened up so I decided to take it because I’m going to need benefits soon. They presented it to me and told me that if I’d like, I can work 9 hours Monday-Thursday so that I can get out early on Fridays and only work 4 hours which is a lot better for me because that would mean an extra half a day for the weekend. This week they decided to let me know that “no just kidding you can’t do that.” They said in order to be considered full time and receive benefits, I need to work exactly 8 hours per day. How in the world does that make sense? As long as I am working 40 hours per week I should be considered full time. Where in the hell did…
