My BFF is awesome. Love her. Obviously. No one in the world has been there for me the way she has.
But Saturday night I found out that the promotion she recently received was due to her pointing out to her bosses that a woman at their company isn't necessary because they could easily automate her job.
I was gobsmacked. She's politically progressive, very people oriented in that vein, and just not a cruel person. But listening to her talk about how she got her promotion it was clear to me that she hadn't spared one single thought for the poor woman who just lost her job.
I understand that automation is the future. But as has been discussed here many times, with that change must come a change in the way we distribute wealth. We can't automate and just fire people, giving them no way to afford their lives.
Now, I will say, outside of politics she is very analytical and her job is all about expediency and the optimization of time and money. And I know that the antiwork movement isn't even on her radar at all. But I'm still so disappointed in her.
I hope that poor woman got a decent severance and finds new employment quickly.
