I just heard the most heartbreaking news on the phone.

I’m a doctor in an ICU in another country (let’s say). Family called for an update. Give the update and family member says thanks for being there, we can’t leave our jobs to come or we would be fired. “They’d really do that to you?” Yes, my boss just told me to get off of the phone. They know why I called…. It’s so infuriating, and so sad. I wish I could tell the boss. I’ll remember that you don’t want family around if you or someone you love gets sick. I’ll remember you don’t want phone calls. I’ll make sure the doctors I went to medical school with know. I’ll tell all my nurse friends. I’ll tell my friends at the pediatric hospital. I’ll tell my friends at the nursing home in your town. Next time your little hospital sends me a patient I’ll make sure to bring up…

Next time your little hospital sends me a patient I’ll make sure to bring up your name and let them know your wishes. I’ll make sure your wishes are followed to a T. Or, you could choose to be kind and help families be together when it matters, and I’ll make sure they reflect every ounce of kindness you show your employees.
