I recently started a new job working at a summer day camp for k-6. I’m super excited about it, and I think it’s a perfect fit for me. Except for a few things that are driving me insane.
We had 2 weeks of training. And yes, it was incredibly boring. Half of it was full days in a lecture hall in a college campus. On our first day training, at the end of the 3 hour meeting, they told us that we weren’t actually required to be here.
One of the programs we spent a full day training on was a program that we aren’t even using. We are required to use a evidence based social emotional learning program in order to receive grants. So we have one that we are using and have already finished lesson planning for. But upper management likes this new one that is not yet evidence based. So they decided to train everyone on it even though we don’t have time to teach the lessons from it. During this training, they also forced us to sit by people we don’t know who work at different locations for the entire morning.
I was SO EXCITED for training to be over so I could actually start working with the kids. Except one problem. I have yet to receive my approval to work with kids. I wasn’t able to finish turning in paperwork until Saturday because (1) my WiFi was out, (2) I didn’t have one of the links I needed, (3) I had no energy to complete it after 8 hour days of training, and (4) I originally received the paperwork while I was on vacation. I was told my approval would likely not come in time to work on Monday. Annoying but okay. On Monday, I called the person in charge of approving people. She said I would likely be approved on Tuesday and that I was 17th in line. Tuesday came and I hadn’t received approval, so I called and was told I was 3rd in line and would likely receive my email to be approved for the next day. On Wednesday, still no email. My calls went to voicemail and same for today. There are around 200 employees across the various locations that she is in charge of approving. And she is the ONLY person qualified to do so. I have no idea why they have not hired more people for her.
I also can’t get paid for training until I get my approval because I can’t access the app to input my hours.
Thank you for letting me rant. This has been frustrating as heck.
