Not even going to mention the company’s name, but I was initially hired as temporary with the chance of becoming permanently employed. I worked there for 6 months, doing my tasks as textbook as it gets. I literally worked as hard as I could, to the point where I would physically be pained. I would come home with calluses and blisters all over my feet from walking 9,000-15,000 steps per night (graveyard shifts). All because I wanted a permanent position.
On my last month, I get called to the office as I am working. They tell me that they’re letting me go, initially being vague in the beginning. They said they did notice my great work ethic, and that I was at the top of the list to be one of the temporary workers to be employed full-time. After talking for a solid 30 minutes, my boss bluntly told me the real reason for getting let go. Apparently the company wants “workplace diversity”, therefore that’s why the General Manager hired the 2 female temporary employees full-time, and cut me and others from the job. I say this with 100 percent honesty, I was doing 10x more work than both of those female coworkers. Many nights I had 10+ hours of work to do, while they only had 4-5 hours of work to do in a 8 hour shift.
I am all for women’s rights, and giving women equal opportunities as men, but it seems like big corporations likes to use women and other groups like pawns. The big corporations want the general public to believe that the said company is so wonderful to give women and other people great benefits. When in reality, that same corporation only sees that employee as another number, another slave to generate more revenue to the greedy.
I will admit that I’m upset, I lost the best paying job in my rural town. I don’t blame the other temporary coworkers that got hired full-time, instead I blame the greedy cash cow of a corporation that wants to deceive the public. Speaking of that, another reason so many of us got cut was because the GM will earn bonuses without as many people (especially around the holidays).
I got fired because of my gender, not because of my performance. Now I’m back to being unemployed with no other options in this shitty town. It’s either work fast food the rest of your life here, or go to college. It’s been a month since I was fired and my family is already pressuring me to find another job. I turned 21 not too long ago and I honestly don’t know what to do in life.
