Honestly, I hate that there is no “good faith” offers anymore. I hate even more that I fell for one in this day and age.
I have been with my current company about a year and a half now. 3 months ago, I saw opportunity to advance within and went for a small promotion. I'd be under the same manager just a different department and it was going to be a better fit all around, but the best part was I'd get a raise.
So when I was offered the position I was overjoyed. It came with an immediate pay bump of $1.25 per hour. Awesome! Then my manager did something unexpected. They offered me an additional raise of $2 per hour after my trial period – 3 months. Um, yes please. Needless to say, I spent those three months working hard to prove not only that I could do this new job, but that I was good at it. (All this felt extra important because I made a sudden field switch with this job. From childcare to office work, I've been historically watched on the job for worry I wouldn't do well)
Well now that it's time, my manager pulls me in for a meeting late last week. And our conversation went a lot like this…
Manager: So we promised you a raise, I believe it was $1 per hour?
SassyMarmot99: I believe it was $2?
M: What do you think you're worth?
S: I have been working hard. Maybe $2. I also can't be upset about any raise in this world. (My second mistake, I know. I'm weak)
M: Great! Let's do $1.
Conversation over. As I left my managers office all I could think about was my first mistake. I never got the offer in writing. It was all “good faith”. So here I am with a slightly smaller raise, feeling slightly defeated by my bosses. They got me.
