I don't normally quit a job without another job lined up, but I this job got too crazy too fast.
I got what seemed like a chill job at a vape shop. The hours were long (10+) but it seemed like a good fit for the moment. We sell CBD and Delta as well as vape products. Its more of a head shop and vape store. My manager told me she sold weed on the side, and I didn't think anything of it. What she does off the clock is her business. We also sell kratom(please feel free to look it up). The area of the shop isn't the best, but when you have 2 or 3 employees working its not bad.
The past 2 weeks, my coworkers have either been calling out or no call no show. I would be stuck doing these 10+hr shifts by myself in a less than thrilling area. The first few hours of the first shift wasn't bad until it got dark out. Because I was still new, i had keys to the building but not to the locked display cases. If someone came in wanting delta or kratom while I was alone, I couldn't open the case and sell it to them. Some regulars were chill, but others got real nasty. Verbally abusive and even tried to trash the store. We don't have any security cameras, so when I told my boss she didn't believe me.
The new few shifts by myself just got worse. At this point it was several days in a row I was left alone. Not only were regulars upset they couldn't get their legal fix, but now it has been several days in a row AND they couldn't get their fix. On top of this, a few times some kids would come in looking to score weed but my boss was out of town. Turns our she didn't sell it on her off time, she sold it on the clock. I would be asked “since she's not here can I buy from you??” Fuck no, Id kick them out.
On one of these days I didn't answer the phone while I was in the bathroom, my boss and her son at the other location sent me texts asking me why I wasn't doing my job. Someone flushed tampons and a washcloth down the toilet, and they were trying to pin it on me. Who tf flushes a whole ass washcloth down a toilet, let alone tampons?! The last straw, and I had already been wanting to quit at this point, was I asked for a mental health day because working 3 10hr shifts by myself back to back was absolutely hell. My boss told me “No, there's no coverage”. I told her “Alright, no worries. I'll be in anyway.” followed by “If you don't show up turn in your keys”
I went in, finished my last shift, and left my keys on the register for who ever was opening the next day, if anyone was coming in to open.
Apologies for any grammar or spelling mistakes. I'm personally a stoner but I don't “deal” or anything like that on the clock, never had. Its stupid to put your employees in that type of mess. I almost forgot… My boss has a “if they are old enough to shoot a gun, they are old enough to smoke” policy. I was lucky and never had to deal with someone underage trying to buy nicotine. Yes, I'm in the US.
