I put my two weeks in at my job at the escape room company I work with and went to their hottest competitor.
-My current job constantly talks about not being able to pay us but hasn't put ticket prices up since before 2019 when they bought the place. The price is the lowest in the entire region because of this.
-They told me straight up that they only wanted to hire an older male manager (hiring discrimination) who is good at fixing things.
-They made me pay $200+ on a doctor's note to prove I was sick and didn't reimburse it.
-I asked for a raise AND a promotion, they put me as keyholder with a $0.50/hr bump and said they couldn't give me a raise until August.
-I worked keyholder, realized I was an unspoken Assistant Manager for $12/hr (several less than our previous AM for the same responsibilities) when I specifically said I would not be that because I knew their tendencies to push people into more than they were paid to do.
I tried pushing a ticket price increase so they could pay their employees. I updated their systems. I became the computer person because they're old and their systems are ancient now. I tried everything to increase the possibility of getting a raise and showing my value, and $0.50 for a promotion to a job that I'm working more than I'm paid for is all I got. I'm done.
New job training is Game Master for $11/hr, bumps to $13/hr after a few weeks (a dollar more than my Keyholder Game Master salary), and can go to $15/hr after a few months after an assessment of how well I've learned the games.
I'm so happy. I'll miss my coworkers but God damn do I feel better and treated better at the new job already, even just in the talks for intake paperwork. 🥳
This is your sign to step out of that comfort zone and jump into the opportunities that come, even if it's hard. You've got this!
