I've worked at a vet clinic for about a month now. Prior to the other day, I had only missed one day because I had a gastro virus. I called out a few days ago because I had a flair up in my medical condition and was hardly able to walk. When I texted my manager to let him know, he implied that I had lied about my medical condition because I didn't tell him at my interview and insisted that I needed to work the following day, no matter what. No “get well soon” or anything, just that.
When I went to work the next day, he fired me on the spot for not being honest and said he couldn't depend on me now to work every day, in case I had another flair up. Keep in mind, I haven't had one in almost 2 years and it's generally managed by my medication. That's why I didn't even bother bringing it up. To make it even worse, before he fired me, I had explained that the reason for my flair up was because I found out I was going to be living in my car at the end of the month and the stress is what caused it.
I really wish I hadn't taken this job in retrospect, but I was desperate because I didn't want to end up in my car again. I wish I hadn't ignored all the red flags, such as:
1.) Wanting 100% loyalty and dedication while short-staffed, all for $10/hour
2.) Asking me to buy a uniform to wear for a 3 hour trial day to see if they wanted to hire me
3.) My manager laughing at the interview about how people quit a lot because they have a problem with him and him insisting that it was their problem because they couldn't handle the job
I'm so tired of being treated like shit at every single job I've ever had. When are managers going to realize that their employees are human beings, not assets?
