I think I was discriminated against in a job interview for my religion

I applied for an accounting job at a Baptist church. The interview went perfectly, probably the best I’ve ever done in one, until they asked me about my “salvation story”. This has literally nothing to do with what the role would have entailed. I figured they might ask this but thought surely not, is that even legal? Put on the spot, I had to admit I was raised Catholic. I think that was what did it. Despite the interview going flawlessly, I got an email a couple days later saying that “we have decided not to offer you the position.” I thought it was a strange choice of words considering they didn’t mention another more qualified candidate being hired instead. I’m not bitter about not getting the job, I’m just suspicious considering the interview could not have gone better plus the strangely worded rejection email. My boyfriend thinks I’m being…

I’m not bitter about not getting the job, I’m just suspicious considering the interview could not have gone better plus the strangely worded rejection email. My boyfriend thinks I’m being a sore loser but I promise that’s not the case- I just want to know what others think about this.
