I told my boss I intended to resign in an email to him but have not submitted any resignation letter. Can the email be used as ground to fire me prematurely?

Long story short, I made a novice mistake of trusting my boss and told him my intention to leave way before the minimum 2-weeks. Most importantly I mentioned in an email to him that I planned to resign in a few months (I used the exact word). Now there are signs he's got passive aggressive and might try to get me terminated early. Could he do that with just the email I sent and without a formal resignation letter?
