I turned in my resignation letter this morning to management. I spoke to my coworker who is a manager and let him know I would be coming by this morning to pick up my stuff and submit my resignation letter. We are really close and he is also planning on leaving. The work environment was absolutely toxic and chaos. I am receiving phone calls by management and HR and I refuse to answer. I'm furious still. I am not planning on using this company as a reference whatsoever. Am I obligated to answer any calls? I don't want to sign off on anything. I'm sure they will try to get to me to go into the office to do my offboarding. They have to issue a check within 72 hours (I'm in California). My question is: Can they legally refuse to pay out my working hours and vacation if I refuse to answer their phone calls? I don't want to speak over the phone or in person because this company is dirty and would try to record our conversation and use it against me. That job gave me extreme anxiety and depression. I just don't want to deal with it. I don't care how petty it is.
**Details below
The company had a vice president back in 2020 who embezzled over a million dollars from the company. Now they are completely paranoid that each and every one of their employees is stealing. My immediate supervisor pissed me the fuck off yesterday and just had it out for me. She basically accused me of stealing company time because I forgot to clock out and in for lunch. It was an honest mistake. She brought me to her office and started yelling at me and I just had enough. She was like “well if you're doing this I can only imagine what else you have been lying about.” AGAIN WITH THE STEALING ACCUSATIONS. She has made multiple remarks like this on several occasions. She does it to all the employees and I finally had enough. I had an outstanding 6 month performance review last week which went great. Next day she tells me she is giving my title to a Temp employer (I'm a full-time direct employee) and I will get a new title. She gave my higher title and position to the new temp. I would keep my same pay but I just didn't care after that. That was a slap to the face. I've busted my ass off in the 6 months I was with the company and never received a complaint. I was told several times I was great at my job and was their star employee. This was a small family business so there is a lot of family drama and office politics. There was a lot of illegal activity going on which I wasn't ok with.
