This story happened some time ago now, but I thought this sub might appreciate it.
I worked in the PC sales department of a retail store that rhymes with Pest Pie. The PC sales manager had just quit, so instead the CD/DVD department manager (CD for short) was made acting PC sales manager until a replacement was found.
My job was basically to walk up to people shopping in the PC sales dept, ask them about what they plan to use the PC for, then make recommendations including lots of ACCESSORIES because there is no profit margin on the PC, and lots of profit margin on the accessories.
So it's Wednesday morning, there are basically no customers in the store, so I'm just facing products on the shelves. One customer walks through the PC sales department while talking on his cell phone the entire time. The customer briefly looks at an item or two in the dept, and passes through to another section of the store, still talking on the phone.
This is when CD rushes over to me in the middle of the PC sales floor and says:
CD (raised voice, yelling): Did you see the customer who was in YOUR department? Why didn't you talk to him? Your job is to talk to ALL customers who come in to YOUR department.
Me: He was on his phone, I didn't want to interrupt his conversation.
CD: It doesn't matter! Your job is to talk to them anyway! I don't want to hear your excuses! Do you not want to work here anymore? Do you even care about this job? Because you're acting like you don't.
Me: No, I don't. I quit.
CD (now looking panicked): Uhhh hold on, you're going to have to talk to the store manager.
CD goes and gets the store manager. The store manager takes me into some break room/meeting room I've never seen before. She asks me why I'm quitting and I tell her it's because of CD and I won't let anyone talk to me that way. She makes me sign some kind of form that says I am quitting voluntarily, and then I peace out and never come back.
I was going to college full time and only working there part time to cover my share of split rent. I ended up switching to a full time job as computer help desk making a borderline poverty salary, but still way more than I was making at Pest Pie, so it was still a win at the end of the day.
