Today was my second day at a new job as a sales associate at a higher-end retail store. My shift was from 12-8 and as I was shadowing another associate to train, I had to take my break when she did. She was working from 9:30am-8pm so she took 30 minutes at 2:30, which meant I had to have my break at the same time. By 6:30 when she went on break again for 30 minutes, I asked the assistant manager (AM) if I could quickly take a break to have a snack. I wasn't hungry at lunch because it was early for me and didn't finish it. This has never been a problem at any other store or job I've had so I was surprised when the AM if I could take 5 and she asked why I didn't eat at lunch and said that no other breaks were allowed. If I were to take those 5 minutes, they'd be docked from my hours. Despite the face that I got in 10 minutes early to work to buy something and she was already getting me to work before my assigned starting time. I forgot how much these big companies leech off of their employees. It's only my second day but it's clear that my wellbeing isn't very important to her, only if I'm making the store money.
