I was just told that we will not be working and will NOT BE PAID for the next two weeks

I work for a nonprofit in Illinois and I learned today that our hours for the next two weeks have been cancelled. is it legal to do this on such short notice? I depend on this money! is there a way to be compensated. I am obviously starting to look for other jobs starting right now.
