I make $19/HR gross, ≈$600-$625/week after tax
I currently work in a kitchen for my aunt-in-“law” (unit manager). I am her top employee, much to my distaste saying so. I am her “yes man” to any work that has been left over from previous shifts (24 hr restaurant). I have been life-partners with my GF (boss’ niece) for almost 8 years. She has multiple medical conditions that render her ≈75% dependent on me for basic life tasks and support since the family is in denial of her proven/documented medical conditions and the severity of her illness (post history). Because I work around 42-45 hours a week, take her to 1-4 doctor appointments a week; and provide constant emotional, financial, and physical support I am absolutely drained.
My GF lives with her aunt. I had to switch days with another coworker (one time) in order to make it to an appointment. Because my coworker is a lazy dipshit and couldn’t handle working my shift I am blamed. My boss came at me saying legitimately “if you are expected to be part of the family, I expect you to work your scheduled days.” She even called my GF a whore because she has a best guy friend (she has literally known since she was 11 from a gender neutral version of Boy Scouts) that hangs out with her a couple of times a month. She constantly makes me cover what my coworkers do not finish while I make the same pay as them, but work the busiest days of the week. I seriously have OVER A MILLION DOLLARS IN TOTAL SHIFT SALES MORE THAN THE NEXT HIGHEST SELLING COOK not even an exaggeration. I have made the company about $1,300,000+ in recorded sales over 6 total years. She offered me a $0.50/hr raise just last week ($21 Avg extra per week) to become a Shift Manager. I felt like that was a worse blow to my work ethic/pride than doing it all for no bonus)
She found out I am looking for a new job. Tells me that I owe her and cannot “leave her in this position while remaining family”
She literally thinks she can convince me on her bluff that I do not appreciate her giving her chronically ill niece who is actively enrolled in college with a 3.8 GPA a place to stay while I cannot afford a home for the both of us. My boss LIVES WITH HER MOTHER! My “aunt” is a manger making way over double what I make a year.
I train every new cook that comes in for no extra pay on my end. I pay for every single doctor bill, copay, prescription, meal, item of clothing, toiletry, ect that my GF needs to the point where I forgo therapy and my medical/mental needs to make sure her family does not need to cover it. I haven’t bought a damn thing for myself in years. and my “aunt” wants to say that I need to EARN my place as family??? nah fam. Fuck you. I quit tomorrow.
