I’m furious.
In August 2021 I was fired because I refused to work without pay. My boss was late by 2-3 pay periods before finally covering my check over a month later.
I opened a case with the NJDOL and after a year they gave up because he kept ignoring subpoenas to provide his payroll records. I got a letter saying if I wish to pursue it could take years and I’d have to appear in front of a judge.
Honestly the guy was such a dick in general that I never want to be in the same room with him again.
I’m going to submit a tip to the fraud line on Monday. It sucks because this ruined me financially and even though I’m nearly 2 years removed, I can’t shake the feeling he needs to face justice and made an example of.
What’s more is that he filed for 9 employees, when there were 4 including himself. Borrowing out of his 401k to cover payroll, but assuring me that he wouldn’t get a penalty if he paid it back within 60 days – as if I give a fuck where the money comes from.
I would also get guilt tripped getting messages such as “my wife and I are at the doctor I can’t talk” or “my wife is going into surgery” (she’s a cancer survivor).
My coworkers experienced the same, and anyone who spoke up was fired. They chose not to pursue and moved on after getting in somewhere else.
I used to feel embarrassed over it, but it happened so gradually that when COVID hit everything went into hyper mode. 1+ month for 2 pay periods. I lost my apartment, I had to rehome my cat. Fuck everything about that dude he should never be allowed to run a business, let alone an ice cream truck.
Has anyone been through something similar?
