I worked for American Income Life so you don’t have to

For the uninitiated, AIL is a life insurance company that many have likened to a MLM/Pyramid scheme (for good reason, though I probably wouldn’t lump them in with the likes of Herbalife or Mary Kay. It’s more like a company that wants all of the characteristics of a MLM operation without actually being one). I got hired in January, passed my licensing in February, and began working on 3/1. During my second week after being released, I was presented with an Outstanding Performance certificate for writing $4,000+ in policy premiums. I quit Easter weekend. I got hired in January, passed my licensing in February, and began working on 3/1. During my second week after being released, I was presented with an Outstanding Performance certificate for writing $4,000+ in policy premiums. I quit Easter weekend.

Here’s the rub: they prey on 1) students and 2) industries with high turnover because they know people are unhappy. The lure you in with promises of six figure incomes and a good culture. They reinforce that while you’re in training by letting you call out of lead packs that are assigned to the upper management. Once you’re released though, the leads you receive are called through, sometimes for months or even years so you get a lot of angry people on the phone. They tell you in the interview process that you make your own hours and you don’t have to work the weekends if you don’t want to. Then, they are constantly calling you to find out where you are if you aren’t logged into Zoom. (“Be Your Own Boss” means something a little different to them I guess).

Honestly, if you’re okay with giving up on any semblance of personal space or a life outside of work, you might thrive. But I have a wife and daughter and I wasn’t willing to give up on them in exchange for a soul crushing job.

I went back to the food service industry for a minute as I’m preparing to move states next week and didn’t want to look for a job somewhere that I’d just end up leaving, so I’m back with a company I actually love for now until my move, where I already have a job lined up at a steel mill.

Good luck to all of you, and don’t ever trade your mental health for your job.
