I wouldn’t let my boss push me around and ended up doubling my salary

I work in the private sector and had a boss who was always micromanaging me. He kept pushing me to take on more work and I always accepted because I am a hard working person. One day, my boss tried to talk to me about an altercation I had with another employee. I won't go into detail here but basically we got into an argument about politics. My boss told me I was not allowed to talk about stuff like that in the office, let alone attack another employee for their beliefs. I told him to his face that I will say what I want, I work hard every day and have earned the right to express myself. He said he would fire me if I didn't comply.
