I saw this pop up on Twitter and thought it was truly disgusting behavior!
A union in Iceland laid off all of its 40 some employees on the first day that a new chairperson took control. The new chairperson didn't even have the decency to show up for work that day and instead she had lawyers send out the resignation letters at 2:00 am in the morning.
The plan apparently is to hire people back that want to apply again but at lower wages.
To top it all off the employees have to work there until their notice is up which happens to be on May 1st, International Workers' Day. That's an incredible fuck you to the employees and definitely done on purpose.
This is what happens when capitalists take over a union. They destroy the organization from within. Fire all of the staff and expect them to come back at a lower cost (anti labor and very predatory tactics). Many obviously won't be back and that means that there is very valuable knowledge about the labor laws, collective bargaining agreements, and other valuable resources that are important to the workers in fighting employer oppression that will be lost.
Let this be an example to not let capitalists take over a union as they will do so much harm the first chance they get and it will impact employees negatively, both at the union and the people the union are supposed to protect from the capitalists.
