I’m being forced to leave my life behind because of my dad’s employers.

This is more of a vent post than anything, but due to the nature of my story I thought it would fit here. I'm also only posting here because I'm not really allowed to tell anyone else. For context, I've been moving around my entire life, never really settling down. Despite being just 17, I've lived in a couple of places India, multiple states in the U.S, and now Canada (after moving twice here as well.) My dad, as such, is a first generation immigrant. Like a lot of them, he's in IT since its a field with a lot of demand, and so he makes decent money. Keep in mind that he works remotely, as it's important to this story. A few days ago, my parents dropped the news that we're moving yet again. (Keep in mind, this is the fifth major move in my life.) I've lived in…

(Keep in mind, this is the fifth major move in my life.) I've lived in my current home for more than 4 years now (not counting the 4 more years that I've lived in Canada, which come out to almost 8 years), and I thought that I'd finally settled down and found a place that I could call home. Needless to say, I was upset.

Upon asking them why, the answer I got was that it was for my dad's work. I always knew that they weren't paying him as much as they should, but I thought it was decent enough for us to keep living comfortably. I was wrong. You see, since my dad works remotely, there was no problem with him living in a country where the company in question didn't have any offices, as he'd just do al the work from his laptop. But of course, that fact is a good enough excuse for my dad's employers to deny him the pay that he should be receiving as someone in his position. Nevermind the fact that my dad constantly does overtime for which he isn't paid, does the work of at least three employees on his own, and manages a small team. I asked my dad why he couldn't just ask for a raise, and he again brought up the fact that they have him by the throat considering his current working situation, and could fire him whenever they want. I thought that at least they'd keep him around since he's a valuable employee with many skills and does a lot of work, but apparently not, since my dad is insistent that they have the means and the balls to fire him if he ever dares adjust his work-life balance or ask to be paid how much he deserves. It's so bad that he even tells me the way they fire people is so humiliating that people do almost anything to try and avoid it, and that the culture around hiring & firing people is absolutely garbage.

So here we are, moving back to the U.S for his employers bullshit, as I leave behind the life I've been building for so long. The only thing that's reassuring about this is that my dad has a better idea of the job market there, so if he does get fired then he'll at least be able to get another low-paying job quickly instead of spending a lot of time looking for one. But even that isn't that great because with his experience, skills and time he should be making a lot more.

Fuck corporations. Fuck the current hiring & firing culture. And fuck everything else.
