I’m done with the corporate glorification of endless hours

Long story short: I interviewed for a job that was supposed to be 40 hours/week, 9-5pm. First week I started, was told I need to work 8-6pm (50 hours/week) and frequently see the person I’m replacing sending emails after midnight. I asked her about it and she laughed at the “40 hour weeks” I was promised, saying I’ll never leave on time. I’m young, have a chronic illness, and kick butt on a 40 hour/week, but the standard these days seems to be glorifying endless hours or working part time with nothing in between (in my industry). What happened to a career with reasonable hours? I bought into the idea of “the corporate hustle” in college, but I’m over it now. The only reward for high performing workers is more work.
