I’m now working at a big company that’s doing well for the first time after working for small companies that were always just skating by

As much as people love to crap on working for big corporations, they have their shit together in a lot of ways due to having more resources. Today was a really slow day at the office. I finished all my work early and was panicking – Should I be doing something else? Am I slacking? My boss said sometimes it gets slow, I could take it easy until I get my project notes back. I felt like it was a test after working for so many companies with that “If you have time to lean, you have time to clean” mentality.

You have no idea how many times I'd be working at a small office job with nothing to do and they'd hand me a broom and tell me to sweep or have me re-arrange boxes in the storage area.

I've also never worked for a company that was doing well financially. The idea here is that today is slow, but we're doing well so there's no reason to panic. Meanwhile, a small business will panic and start going into crisis mode if they have a bad day or week. I've seen people get let go because a week was bad and they assumed the business was going to crash. It's an absolute scarcity mindset.

And since the company is doing well, I'm assuming everyone is good at their jobs and knows what they're doing. I've never worked for a small business where I didn't think the owner was an idiot. Small businesses are small because they can't find ways to expand outwards. Or the owner is just an asshole who wasn't employable anywhere else so they had to start their own business.

Off topic, this sub has switched my prior view of Small Businesses > Big Businesses to Big Businesses > Small Businesses. I've never met so many idiots and assholes in a small business environment.
