Inappropriate to ask old coworker why they left?

Throwaway account because I don’t want to harm chances of at least keeping my job long enough, because you know, rising costs of living, piling-up medical bills from in-office work and related illnesses, and all. I started a new job less than a year ago, matrix model, and in more recent months I’ve been seeing some red flags including but not limited to: – multiple spreadsheets/documents where we have to report in, in addition to our one-on-ones with supervisors, what work we’re trying to get through – a lot of turnover in the past several months I’ve been here – multiple supervisor changes because supervisors remark being overworked – one of the supervisors making comment about my being absent right after I got off bereavement leave for the passing and related affairs for one of my parents – occasional comments supervisors make about whether people are actually working while we’re…

I have a coworker I got along with swimmingly before they recently left. Do you think it would be inappropriate to reach out and ask them if they could provide reasons why they left? They were slightly higher up than I but we overall did some of the same work though theirs was slightly supervisory and had additional duties built in.
