Is this standard? At my job there is an internal job board and they say they give preference to internal candidates. At my role, I am allowed to apply to other jobs within the company once I've been working in my position for 6 months. I've been here this long now and I want to move up, but part of the requirement is that I have to get approval from my boss before applying.
This is causing me a lot of anxiety. My boss and I get along okay…but he's absolutely terrible at hiring good candidates and we are short staffed as it is. I'm worried that if I tell him I want to apply to other jobs in the company he'll tell me no, and that on top of that, he'll start trying to plan my exit because he knows that since I am applying for other jobs in the company, that clearly means I no longer want to work in my current position.
Just wondering if this is standard across the board or if my company is being weird. Also would like to know how best to proceed if anyone has any advice, thanks.
