Is 70k (at least 5 years of expenses) enough savings for a career change?

I am nominally a software engineer and hate it, even though I make 89k pre-tax. I'm a 25 year old male. I want to become a writer (some philosophy but also fiction), while likely having some part time job like laborer, farm hand, animal care/walking, etc. I have 70k in savings. My current expenses are around 1000/month, which would get me around 5 years if I don't earn another cent. However I may purchase a very cheap (~30k) property and working part time (maybe 1 day a week; ~$200/month post-tax) – either of which would extend the lifetime of my savings significantly. How crazy is this? I was planning on sticking it out another 9 months but am so done. My thinking is that even a year of trying to make writing work would give me valuable information, and I'd still have plenty of savings if I realize I've messed…
