Tldr my employer rounds down my hours worked when entering into payroll system. What can I do?
Hello all. I work for a small business that is pretty old fashioned. I clock in using a pen on a physical time card. Probably about 6 months ago I noticed that my manager will put the amount of hours worked next to each day on my time card , I’m assuming to make things easier for the owner who actually does the payroll stuff.
Anyway, my problem is that when my manager puts the amount of hours worked, she does not do the exact time. For example, I usually clock in at 8:50am every morning. Say I worked until 5 that day, my manager will put down that I worked 8 hours, but won’t include the extra 10 minutes that I was clocked in and working for.
I didn’t really think much of it until today, I did the math. If 10 minutes of each day are not be accounted for, that’s a whole 40 hours of work I’m not being paid for in a year. It’s a lot bigger of an issue when you put it that way.
I know I’m stupid for not doing anything about this sooner but i honestly was thinking about it as “oh well it’s only a few minutes”, without considering that those minutes add up over the months and years. Is this legal? Is there anything I can do about it? I don’t want to lose my job, but at the same time I feel like I’ve been robbed of my labor. I’ve been at this place for 3 years and I’m pretty sure they’ve been doing this for the entire time. So basically I’ve had hundreds of dollars if not thousands stolen from me. Advice is appreciated thank you
