Is it normal and/or ethical for your manager to say, “end times are arbitrary”.

I started this job within the last few months and, at first, the scheduling app I had did not even show what time we were supposed to be off. I asked the manager about it but he said he didn’t know. I asked the coworker training me and she said you have to go to another website to view our out times. Cut to a couple months in the job, I ask why I’m always scheduled at the VERY LEAST a couple hours less than what they’re expecting me to say. My manager straight up said, “yeah they actually use that main scheduling website because they don’t want y’all to know the out times”. Furthermore, he explained that, “out times are arbitrary”. I am in the big ‘ole state of Texas. At first, the expectation was that I just finish my task list and leave. In my position, I technically work two stations so I’m one of the only ones with three pages of task lists. Usually, there is another person to finish the tasks for busier days but when there is not, I am expected to do them.

I don’t mind working long shifts but working 9-5 is way different than 9-9, especially when I take the bus. I just ask to know ahead of time because they not only expect me to finish my tasks but also stay and help if they are understaffed. It’s just very disrespectful to me and my time.

I also don’t get any breaks but Texas laws confuse me.
