Is it normal for a job to schedule a shadow day before they decide to hire you?

I interviewed for a receptionist position at a local spa. They left me a voicemail asking for my availability to interview a second time and schedule a shadow day. I left them an email asking how long the shadow day is supposed to be and if I’m going to be compensated for my time (because honestly anything more than an hour is kinda ridiculous). They haven’t gotten back to me. My bf said that a lot of training isn’t paid, and I understand that, but they haven’t even decided to hire me and are asking for a shadow day. Even if it was paid, isn’t a second interview + shadow day a little overkill for a receptionist job…? Let me know your thoughts.
