Is it normal to ask on the first day if I can take half hour lunches rather than 1 hour?

I am considering requesting a negotiation regarding my break times and asking if it is possible to have a 30-minute lunch break instead of an hour. However, I am uncertain if it is appropriate to make this request on my first day of work or if I should wait for a week. In my previous job, I had an 8 am to 5 pm schedule with an hour-long lunch break. But for this new job, I have learned today that my work hours will be from 8:45 am to 5:45 pm. To be frank, I would prefer to leave work early instead of staying late and getting home late. However, upon reflection, it may not make much difference in terms of traffic since rush hour congestion affects both the morning and evening commutes.
