Is it worth it to take action against my company for keeping my vacation time?

I have been a low level supervisor at my company for the past ten months. I had an opportunity and decided to leave my position. I gave a three week notices both verbally, and in writing (an email from my company email address) that I was resigning and when my last day would be. I have worked all my remaining shifts. In my state you are only legally required to pay out vacation time if it is established in company policy. (Side note: it was incredibly difficult for me to access company policy, even as a a supervisor. My direct manager has tried to have my back and was able to send me screenshots.) I followed company policy to the letter, yet I was told by higher ups “we don’t in pay out vacation time here.” I have 40 hours saved up, which would be around $1000 that would be extremely helpful right now. But I don’t want to begin any sort of legal or logistical headache. Is it worth taking further action or will these big corporations constantly screw you over because you don’t have the energy or resources to fight it?
