Is termination the new norm?

I just started a new job last week dec 19 worked with no problems the first week, we have Monday off and Tuesday, I report to work on time like I have been. I arrive at 6am (a few minutes early to ensure i report timely). There’s a meeting goin and I speak then I go to the locker room change into my welding gear, come back outside the Locker room and attend the meeting. During the meeting we are all told we’ll be doing the same thing welding sub bases. I’m on the same job I worked last week before the break. It’s a partnered station I weld half the base other welder does the other half. I notice he does not start working when I do, he is standing at the station but not equipping his gear/on his phone and just genuinely bs. No problem I mind my…

No problem I mind my business and finish my part of the job. Literally the moment I finish he ask me to “do his side while he grabs a battery for his helmet. I didn’t disagree but this guy leaves the station for a long time. Never mind this because after waitin for 3-5 mins I use my phone to post a comment on Reddit.

Before I finish the comment The owner sends two guys from management to lmk to grab my things and im being fired for cell phone use. I come over to the owner with the other guys and no one says anything to me . Tsk I grab my things out the locker room and talk to the owner in the front. He’s avoiding me walking away from me and goes into the maintenance cage. I wait at the door for the guy. (He’s there for five minutes)

When the owner comes out I call him by name to get his attention. He tells me he’s seen me on my phone multiple times today and shows me a picture he took from behind my back of me on the phone. I tell the guy why not tell me to get on my phone if it’s a problem and he says when you get to a job you should be busting your ass to show them you’re a good worker. ATP the other two guys overwhelm me in my conversation with the owner. I’m shocked, I leave in defeat at 6:32.

The same day Tuesday I text the guy who hired me at 6:45 sayin I’m fired for phone use and I really want my job, no response.

Well it’s Thursday not only have I not received a text back but I haven’t been paid for my first week of work. I’m at a lost of words I was expecting to make a career out of this now I don’t know if I’ve been scammed and should be worried.

It seems like since Covid hit the odds of people being fired are high. Are any of you having a problem like this?
