Is the states really that f**ked up?

Something I see a lot on here is people saying they make 2x or more the minimum wage and still can't afford rent, care insurance or other basic money sinks. It always catches me of guard. I'm Canadian and fresh out of highschool I did road construction making around $5000 a month. I hated it so after 2 years I made the decision to find a job that was a standard 40 hours a week rather than 70+. That job is now $3 over minimum wage but I'm still able to afford a condo with my GF, a vehicle, insurance for it, every other basic need and still have $300-500 per paycheck to do whatever the hell I want with. So I'm just wondering how its so vastly different for so many people on this sub.
