It feels illegal that employers demand to know your previous wages when applying to their jobs

I live in Illinois, USA. Perhaps it actually is illegal here since we have a good track record of progressive employment legislation?? But in any case I’m applying for work that pays more than my current position and the vast majority of job applications here ask for your current wage. That feels like it should be privileged information and that they’d use it to drive down wages to the lowest possible rate they can get people to work for. It’s depraved. Edit – it is illegal, thanks u/no_god_for_you for pointing out. This is messed up and I’m angry. Here’s the law that they’re breaking , unless it was repealed since 2019 but I haven’t seen anything indicating that
