“It’s not your fault, its THEIRS…”

So at work a couple years ago (Petro-Can gas station), 5 mins after midnight, I just finished my shift. My coworker who took over for the next shift had to switch the gas prices, so I stayed a few more minutes to let him do that so I could man the cash register for him. There is a line-up in the store. Currently an older woman is packing up the groceries at the cash, taking a bit of time. – A younger woman (in her 30s) in line-up says: “Is there someone who could open the 2nd cash” – Me: “No there isn't.” (The midnight shift has only one register open from 12-8am.) The older woman feels self conscious and apologizes to the younger woman. -The younger woman: “Oh, no it's okay dear. It's not your fault, its theirs.” … OURS? Our fault!? Really? OURS? Our fault!? Really? It's nobody's bloody fault, lady. It's fucking midnight! On a Thursday! At a gas station! This isnt Superstore at 2 in the afternoon! It's a convenience store. AND I'm literally standing at the cash in my coat and hat, ready to leave. I am off the clock!! If it wasn't for me, you'd be waiting a lot fucking longer because my coworker would have to change the prices by himself and you'd be just standing there while he did it. What a bitch.

But of course this stayed inside myself. I made eye contact with the older lady, both raising our eyebrows. Her and I had the mutual understanding that she was a bitch.

Anyway… a few months later I was happy to see she was barred from the store for shoplifting.
