My production manager told me this. For context, I work from 10h30 to 19h30 5 days a week. I just got taken back in the national sports team and so I have to make changes to my schedules so that I can attend my training sessions. The thing is, my training is at 18h00 and I should be leaving work at about 17h00 3 times a week so that I could be on time. I informed HR of this and HR agreed to it. Now HR called me the next day and told me it wouldn't be possible because my prod manager refused my request on his side.
Apparently, it would cost like 7.5 hours per week off production. I told them they could cut the money if that was the issue. They refused. They said it's the prod time that's important. I asked for a work from home or work the weekends to compensate. The answer was still a no.
My prod manager then called me in a meeting room and told me to take a decision. I told him I must attend my training sessions or else I would be kicked out of the national team. His response? “You should make a choice. You're an adult. Sports will get you nowhere. Take responsibility like a man, you have a child to feed and so you must work. Make them move your training sessions because I need you here for work. It's your personal life that should accomodate the work and not the work that should accomodate your personal life.”
I handed my 1 month notice. In my country its one month not 2 weeks. I'm out of this because HR had no problem with it. The issue was with the prod manager. He gave me an ultimatum and forced me to choose between work and the national team. And I took my decision.
