Antiwork

I’ve been on the job a week and a half, my head chef won’t stop giving me shit for not being absolutely perfect at everything.

TL;DR: People are shit. Work doesn't work if you have to suffer constan cunts. Fairness is fairytale just like jack and the beanstalk. I was previously a pizza chef, easy work and I got good at it really quick. In my first couple months I started training the bar staff and new employees and could get them to pick it up in a day and improve fairly quickly. I don't want to be a chef it's just what I got into. I got a new job though as a proper fancy chef, we cook steak and calamari for rich people to eat as finger food while drinking. for the first 4-5 days on the job I was told to just wash the dishes and I thought it was some mr miyagi type shit where I'd slowly build up to cooking after understanding the kitchen. Turns out the coked out motherfucker…

Turns out the coked out motherfucker who I was working with didn't know I was supposed to be a chef not a kitchen porter (I have respect for kitchen porters, they're seriously undervalued and underpaid considering they're almost always the reason everyone gets to go home at a decent time), so I get ran through the menu once and I'm suddenly expected to know how to not only make it but also the Christmas menu we swapped to for the Christmas parties. Even IF I could memorise an entire menu and how to prep it without training and even IF I could execute it to a good standard while never doing it before I'd still get shit from this bastard for asking questions. He's asking me shit like “do you know how to make brownies” even though I'm not a baker and if the situation ever arose, I'd just fuckin Google it, try the recipe and alter as necessary. worse still, I bit my tongue while he was giving me shit earlier because in a sense I can see where he's coming from, he requested a secondary chef to help lighten the load and what he got was a less experienced one who required a small amount of training, fine, I can understand that but even then I literally haven't been given a chance.

In addition to all this shit, where we work is fancy, not “oh there's no shit smeared on the walls” fancy, I mean “guy at the bar had a £5000 tab” fancy, I couldn't afford to live in the area with two months of my pay for even one month. So the bar is obviously flooded with tips for good service and it's nothing to scoff at, the other day they got a £600 tip and were specifically told “give this to your chefs for the great food” so they obviously took it all for themselves and offered us A HALF PINT as a tip, at the end of a shift we can get minimum 3 free beers so a half pint for a tip is abysmal. I just want out. I can't stand the blatant unfairness. Please bros how do escape? how do I escape this fucking system because another 12 hours on my feet might actually kill me unless I don't go to jail for assault.
