job lied to me about holidays and is now screwing me over to work both Thanksgiving and Christmas “because it’s fair”

Basically what the title says. We rotate every 3rd holiday and weekend. Because Christmas falls on my weekend and our department (in a hospital) doesn't celebrate it on the actual day of, I have to work that even though I'm working Thanksgiving. One of the deciding points for this job was I wouldn't work both of the 2 big holidays, which I specifically asked about. (I've worked both for years, and frankly, any company who allows or forces it is shit). I don't mind working one or the other, but my family is getting older, and time with them is limited and precious. I left a job where I had both Thanksgiving and Christmas off for the opportunities here. I'm furious. They are trying to explain why it makes sense and is fair but I am failing to see why an arbitrary weekday off for the holidays make more sense…

No, I can't just not come in. That's akin to quitting. My department is essential. I'm hoping my upcoming surgery interferes, but that's doubtful. I'll be spending part of my night looking at other jobs that allow me to keep my current school schedule (so hopefully only overnight postings).
