I hope this fits here because I'm not American, which most of you are as far as I've seen.
I'm a student and have been working since September for an organization caring for disabled kids with specialized needs. They told me they have loads of work to do and really need some help, so I started working 20h/week. After less than a month, the kid had to undergo extensive treatment and the case was dropped. They discovered they didn't have any work for me and chose to let me go in November, which I expected and was fine with.
however I was informed that because I didn't work enough (because they didnt give me any work), I'll get a lower salary for this month which already isn't great. Then, my boss updated me saying that I might even have to pay sth BACK for October? That's just fucked up. I'm fortunate enough to not be struggling with bills, but it still seems incredibly unfair and maybe even illegal to me, my girlfriend urged me to contact a lawyer. I'm a little overwhelmed because frankly, I don't have a lot of experience with stuff like this.
TL;DR: Job wants me to pay back part of my salary because they couldn't give me enough work
