Just call me Craig – got fired on my day off (sorta)!

Ok, so that's not exactly accurate. Let me set up the scenario – I was supposed to start a new job on Monday. I have been out of the work force for 12 years (had two kids, Dad died from Cancer, husband diagnosed with Leukemia, chemo, COVID – NTI kids for 2 years). My supervisor sends me a text – don't come in. She had a procedure done on Friday, and she's not ready for me to start training. Ok. Fine. No big deal. 5 minutes later, the owner of the business calls and wants me to come in and “wing it,” as he is out of town, and has nobody to cover the store. I have ZERO training. I haven't even filled out paperwork. I have no idea how their computer system or phone system works, I don't even know where office supplies are, and I have no keys…

Ok, so that's not exactly accurate. Let me set up the scenario –

I was supposed to start a new job on Monday.

I have no idea how their computer system or phone system works, I don't even know where office supplies are, and I have no keys with which to open the building. Not only does this job involve answering the phone, but pianos are sold there, and I know jack shit about pianos. I don't know the prices, I don't know if they finance, I know NOTHING. I feel very uncomfortable with this proposition, and tell that to the owner, in a very professional and careful manner, of course. He says “THANKS!” in a super pissy tone of voice, and hangs up. I'm like, “uh oh.” and text my supervisor, who assures me that he's pissed at her, not me, and she'll see me on Saturday (today) at 10 am. Ok, fine.

So, I go in today, and she looks very stunned to see me, and tells me that the owner had decided to go another direction, because he felt I wasn't reliable enough or a team player. Which is hilarious, because I NEVER EVEN GOT TO START.

She informs me that they emailed me to let me know that they were rescinding the offer. They didn't even have the balls to call me and tell me – (after scouring my email for 45 minutes, I found it – in spam) I'm so stunned that I can barely speak, and despite my best efforts, I do start to tear up a little bit. There were some guys there to help move pianos, and they were like, “OMG, are you ok? This is SO FUCKED UP!”

So basically what it looks like happened is, she found out she has Cancer, and the owner got pissed because he has nobody to cover the office when she's out, and because I wasn't willing to come in and run his business with NO TRAINING, he felt that I would be unreliable, not a team player, etc. He can't fire the lady with Cancer, so I got the axe, again, because I was uncomfortable running an office with no training, no paperwork being signed, NOTHING. First time I've ever lost a job over someone else's health issues. The best part is, about 2 hours after getting the axe, my ex-supervisor texts me, and asks me if I'd be interested in working there if she can get the owner on board. I'm considering texting back, “Sure, if you can promise me I'll never have to deal with him, work with him ever, you can promise me I won't have to be constantly looking over my shoulder, worrying about him firing me for any little reason, and you hire me at a much higher rate. Then maybe, MAYBE, I will consider accepting the position. Again.”

If you've made it this far, thanks! I needed to vent. I'm still so upset that I'm shaking. So, anyway – maybe you've had a shitty day, but I bet you didn't get fired because someone else has a health issue & a business owner had shitty planning skills, and super unrealistic expectations.
