So, I was just fired from my job for failing a secret shop (US, CO), despite not having any previous write ups. I was the acting property manager for a townhouse community. My official title was assistant, but I worked alone and did all day to day operations. I had a property manager when I started but she transferred and was not replaced. I was given all her duties but not the title or pay, or authority – that went to the regional.
Based on the behavior of corporate over cash revenue the last few months, particularly fiending over individual rent payments like they were running out of money, and the failure to replace my manager, I have reason to believe that I was fired only to avoid laying me off and that they have no intention of replacing me, just having the regional manager work the property himself so they can save money by eliminating the position.
Pretty sure this is illegal (to fire instead of lay off), and shouldn't be hard to prove if they don't hire anyone or advertise the position (they haven't). Just not sure what the course of action is to get my 3 months lay off pay, instead of just filing for unemployed.
Anyone?
