Lack of respect for a new manager

I have been working for the same retail store for many years now, but the last few years it’s been only part time since I started studying. Recently a managment position opened up, and I know that if I applied I would be able to get it because of my experience at this store. I have even been offered one previously, but declined because of my studies. The person that got the managment position is about my age, but I am a few years his senior at this store. And I know for a fact my knowledge level is more extensive than his, as I’ve worked in multiple departments. All of this combined makes it difficult for me to respect him as a manager.
