Decided to change up my career path from hospitality to trades because I felt stuck with nowhere to go and wanted something with more growth and better finance. After several months of search I had finally found a trades job that I was actually interested with great potential! Met up with the boss, gave me a nice run down of the work and promised me comprehensive training, schooling, certification, equipment etc. (sounds fantastic!!!). I've told at beginning before I was hired that I am not used to this line of work as I am a bit more spoiled and would need some time to get myself adjusted on getting dirty and operating dangerous machines.
Started the job as a basic laborer, nothing fancy but something enough to understand the basics of the job, boss even check up on me twice during my first week to see how I am liking it to which I've responded I enjoy it and especially enjoy seeing more trained guys doing skilled work. Throughout the entire month I was nothing more attentive, always on time, asking questions, offering to stay late or even work on the weekends to get more and faster trained but that's there some things started to go south slowly. On the second week my boss already informed me that business slowed down slowly and I obviously asked if I should be concerned, he assured me it is fine and it was similar last years where they only didn't had work for one day. Contacted boss to send me some materials I could study on to improve on the job, he told he will but never followed through and same happened with asking for training or more clear guidance after he complained his other workers are not following his instructions properly. At this rate I was already concerned because I was doing the same basic labour job but no training or anything has followed through even though he brought it up multiple times on scheduling me for courses or spending a day training me on something to help others better, yet I thought it is not a big deal as he might be busy.
Following my last week a new guy got hired, we were introduced to him and it made clear that he has quite a lot of experience in this field plus certifications and such. No big deal, if he hired someone new that means business is picking up again! 2 Days later I've noticed that the guy has new equipment on already supplied, I thought nothing much of it. Week finished and on the weekend boss shoot me a message telling me that he will have to evaluate on putting me through training or if he has hours due to additional men now as he has hired the new guy, my response was “Understood” and left it at that. Monday rolled in and boss called me to give me amazing news that he is going to lay me off as he doesn't have work for me anymore after hiring the new guy, he tried being nice and offering to give me some weekend work once I found a new job, told me there was nothing wrong on what I did as everyone liked me etc. Obviously I felt hurt and pissed at the same time but I decided to keep my composure strong and just respond with “thank you for the opportunity and phone call”.
So now I am sitting here again, unemployed, thinking to myself. What is the point of actually putting any effort to a business if they are not willing to do anything back to you and just lay you off after constantly promising such and such like a dangling carrot.
