I quit my job as a kitchen porter to start working a part-time weekend job at this furniture and home decoration store in the second half of October 2021. I loved the job and pulled my weight. As as soon as the 10th of January 2022 (aka when the Christmas Rush was over) they let me go, giving me the 2 weeks pay without having me work the 2 weeks.
They didn't give me a reason why other than “its just to quiet to keep you around”. But its very obvious that they always planned on firing me as soon as Christmas was over.
They never mentioned that they only needed me for the busy Christmas period and knew that I had quit a job to work there. Now I cant find any part time weekend work because no one is hiring.
Is this a normal thing for employers to do or is this actually really poor etiquette? It certainly feels like the latter
EDIT: Just to clarify, this store I worked for wasnt a big corporation, it was a local family business
