Let’s do some basic math

I’m getting really annoyed with incomes being judged in this sub. This is not a low income sub. This is an anti work sub. There are many people saying 100k is more than enough to live off of. First, that language is exclusive. You are automatically discrediting the lived experiences of an entire demographic of people. You need to consider factors that play into someone’s income. How many people are they caring for? The average cost of food per month is $150-$300 according to a quick Google search. So for a family of 6, that is $900-$1800 a month. Do they have food allergies? Add on more per month per person. This can add $50-150 per month per person that has allergies. Do they have to pay child support? In Texas, child support is 24%+ of your income (increases depending on number of children) this is PRE tax calculated, but…

  1. How many people are they caring for? The average cost of food per month is $150-$300 according to a quick Google search. So for a family of 6, that is $900-$1800 a month.

  2. Do they have food allergies? Add on more per month per person. This can add $50-150 per month per person that has allergies.

  3. Do they have to pay child support? In Texas, child support is 24%+ of your income (increases depending on number of children) this is PRE tax calculated, but is not tax exempt. Even for 1 dependent, this is $24,000 a year paid out monthly ($2,000 post tax)

  4. Where do they live? Bigger cities cost more. Rent for a family of 6 can be $1500-$3000 or more depending on location.

  5. How much do they pay in Taxes? On average let’s just say 30% (which is fairly average) plus how much do benefits cost? $30k for taxes, $1500 a year benefits

  6. Do they have student loan debt? Payments can be any amount, and $800-1000 a month is not unusual.

  7. Have they had a terminally ill or super sick child or partner? This could be hundreds to thousands of dollars every month.

  8. Are they disabled? You often have to cover extra expenses for this.

There are many other factors to consider. Please take time to be compassionate to ALL people on this sub. Don’t alienate people in one demographic merely because you think they have life easier than you.

ETA: I’m not saying that people who make less income aren’t struggling too. I’m saying the system is broken and to stop trying to divide everyone. We should all understand that unless we are the profiting class, we are all being screwed.
