I work in the hospitality industry and I am fairly young with less than a year of combined work experience – just reached 6 months at my current employer this month.
Two weeks ago we had guests from overseas that were quite literally generally and sexually harassing staff, causing damage to the property and in general thrashing the place. They mostly came and went during the night as they were on a stag party – we're talking big fellas who are constantly drunk, about 7 or 8 of them. Hotel staff at night consists of one (1) receptionist and one (1) security guard. Exactly two people – and if you're lucky and it's the weekend – one manager on call.
The guests reserved their rooms for three nights – they should have been thrown out after the first but management decided that our international chain hotel property that was able to afford christmas bonuses for all employees close to a 1000 $ worth of our own currency really just needed the revenue from these 4 rooms – and there was nothing us receptionists could do. And because it was on the weekend, not a single manager in house to throw them out after their first night.
In addition, both my managers started borderline harassing one of my colleagues, literally printing out all her mistakes from the past 6 months and asking if she would quit after finishing her degree this June, so they could hire someone she could train in time for that.
She handed in her two weeks on Sunday, I began applying that very same day. Just today I got my first call and lined up my first interview. If nothing changes in the very near future, management will be short one more receptionist and they can enjoy the big hot mess they made for themselves. I will not spend a minute longer wondering if I'll be their next target for harassment.
