Saw a post that reminded me of this experience when I was trying to prepare to move states with my partner a few years back, and my partner is starting to experience now.
My (24f) partner (24m) and I moved from one state to another in July of 2021 after graduating college. He was accepted to a masters program and the new town had a lot more opportunities for me than the old town so I decided to move with him. I wanted to be prepared and have a job set up for after we moved so I started applying maybe 2-3 months before we anticipated moving. And let me tell you, applying for jobs in a different state, even with giving an explanation that you’re moving to that area on a set date is impossible. I would write in the application and cover letter than I was moving to the area on XX/XX/XXXX and was looking to set up work for once we moved, explaining the situation. Every job I applied to had a start date after we would have moved so it’s not like I was applying to start right away. Most of the positions were remote work as well.
I applied to over 30 jobs, with the same explanation to each one. I didn’t get a single interview, and the hiring managers that did speak to me (if I messaged them or whatever) said they rejected me bc I didn’t live in that town. This even went for work from home positions, it made absolutely no sense. I eventually found a job after I changed my address on the resume and cover letter to the new town, but it just showed me that companies request all this crap when you apply for a job but they don’t actually look at any of it.
And now my partner is having the same experience as he applies since he will be graduating with his masters in May. There’s not many positions for his field in our town so he’s applying basically anywhere in the US. What response is he getting back? Rejections due to not currently living in the area of the position.
You want to move towns or states and are looking for work so you can do so? Too bad. You don’t live here now so we can’t consider you. But we’re going to keep complaining that no one wants to work while we reject qualified applicants for not living in the positions location 3 months before the position even starts.
