I work as an analyst for a fairly large online retailer that would compete with companies like Wayfair. Lately it’s the (unfortunately) usual story for tech – key company metrics are down, no backfills, we’ve let some people go and are tightening the belt…
I have already been concerned about imminent layoffs because I can’t see us not having one if we don’t have a magical uptick in all sales. However, something weird has happened recently and I wonder if it’s coming sooner rather than later.
Several of the individuals on the team I’m on have been promoted. My performance hasn’t been poor and I have never been warned or disciplined for any reason, but I’m less experienced than most of my peers. It feels like they are trying to elevate some people to a space where they become untouchable and those promotions come with a salary boost… even though we have virtually no budget for that…
Could this be a sign of them getting their ducks in a row before a layoff? Would it be fair to say maybe there are going to promote a few top performers and bump their salary in a tough market to kind of ensure no attrition after a layoff? Maybe I’m being paranoid…
