Malicious Compliance Rocks

Background: I was in a minor car accident recently. I informed my bosses right away and let them know that I’d need to work from home until my car got fixed. One of them got VERY upset about this and kept hounding me about it until I finally agreed to make the hour-long commute into the office by train so long as my hours could be adjusted to account for it and I could arrive around 9:30 and leave at 4:30 to make up the time. He agreed to this.

Now, the situation:

Last night, we had a really bad rainstorm with high winds. Lots of damage all across the area.

I got to the train station at my normal time to catch the bullet to work. A worker informed me that a tree had fallen on the tracks last night, and that I’d have to wait 40 minutes for a shuttle to another station. I messaged my whole office (including my bosses) to let them know.

40 minutes waiting for the shuttle + 25 minutes on the shuttle + a 10 minute walk later, and I’m at the other station. A train arrives pretty quickly. They let us on, then tell us that 1. we won’t be leaving for another 45 minutes, and 2. it was a full-service train, meaning it would make every stop on the route (approximately doubling the time it takes me to get to my stop). I finally got into my office and got to start my workday around 11:30am.

I could’ve made an executive decision when I heard about the first delay and headed back to work from home today, and I would’ve started my workday right at 9. Instead, I basically got a paid half day off to listen to my podcasts and scroll on my phone because it’s what my boss wanted
